What They're Saying

'We need to keep our Wilmette charm. That’s what makes our quaint suburb unique. I support progress but want to preserve Wilmette’s character!'

'These buildings do not match the character of our village and will not age well.'

'Fully in support of preserving character in Wilmette.'

' I wish the Village had stricter requirements to blend the new building’s aesthetics to match the area better.'

'This development needs to be aligned with our village character!'

' Supporting Preserve Wilmette Character 100%! '

'Where did my Wilmette go??!!'

'I enthusiastically support the Preserve Wilmette Character mission!'

'Please keep Wilmette's character intact for the future. We are a village, not a city.'

'I love the character of Wilmette and would appreciate the village taking this movement seriously.'

'Keep Wilmette a beautiful quaint village. If new apartments are needed, keep them in the character of brick, stone, low-rise, leaded glass windows, etc. Make them beautiful and LOW-RISE. Don't add too many in one place; sprinkle them throughout.

' We need to preserve the history of Wilmette. Building another “modern” glass building is doing the complete opposite of that. I oppose the new building in order to preserve the villages unique history and charm.'

' I believe we owe it to our residents and community to keep some history and style in our architecture.'

' I, too, oppose the glass wall of Green Bay Road. Wilmette can do so much better.'

' Would definitely like to see a different looking structure go up on Greenbay Rd. One glass building is enough there! Already another modern building farther east in Wilmette. Very much like the solution finally arrived at in Winnetka.'

' I suggest that we look at more design options that are compatible with the current village architecture.'

' Please preserve the character of Wilmette, not another glass building!'

'Yes, something different please'

' I oppose all construction over 3 stories, and all "modern-look" construction with glass walled buildings. These detract from the quality and character of Wilmette.'

' One modern glass building is enough.'

' BRAVO! Why does consistency of architectural character seem to be such an illusion concept in Wilmette? I am all for development and time marching on but our village is such a gem that can easily be lost by failure to impose design consistency.'

' Please make an effort to do better than the glass and unattractive structures now in place on Green Bay. Our community is too important.'

' No to more new glass structures. We need to preserve the quaintness of the village. More Tudor style buildings!'

' Let’s preserve the historic charm of the town and use timeless architecture that will last generations.'

' Please don’t turn Wilmette into another faceless modern suburb. We want to preserve the character and other North Shore towns like Winnetka and Lake Forest have done a beautiful job doing just that please let’s follow their example.'

' We can do better!! The old Imperial building is so beautiful and has such great character, there has to be another option.'

' We do not need another modern glass building in Wilmette!!! I’m sure there are other options to consider.'

' Both new structures in GBR are not in keeping with the feel of Wilmette.  I’m not interested in seeing everyone’s belongings from the street!!'

' One anonymous glass office building on GB Road is enough. Contextualization and reflecting the character of the existing environment creates community-friendly architecture.'

' I love the look of downtown Winnetka. Would love to see Wilmette looking “big picture” at a way to redevelop downtown while keeping the quaint and historic feeling.'

'Historic preservation helps maintain the integrity of the unique architectural landscape of downtown Wilmette and the character of the north shore. We can do better. '

'This building is totally not in keeping with the aesthetic of the “village”

' We do not support to building of another large modern glass.'

' This proposal is contrary to every Wilmette Comprehensive Plan and study since 1922.'

' Thank you for taking action. This town is becoming a village with no identity.'

' Really, wasn’t one enough? We really can do better. Believe in that.'

'No more glass buildings. Please preserve and build upon the historical aesthetics of the village.'

' Oppose glass buildings taking over Wilmette'

' I support a design that is more in line with the architectural heritage of the area rather than an all-glass enclosure.'

' Maintain the character of Wilmette.'

' Preserve and support Wilmette’s architectual style and charactor. Enough of one ‘sour of an eye’ that this awful glass building is. Wilmette must do better. No one wants to see another glass box.'

' Part of the charm of living here is the history and people that make up Wilmette. When we start replacing the very character that makes it special, we rob future generations of the chance of experiencing the love we have for our town.'

' Yes I support keeping the integrity of a village town oppose another glass eyesore which will overtake Greenbay and kill any village charm.'

' One mistake is one too many with be first optima building.'

' We feel that another building of this type would adversely affect the beauty and smalltown feel of our beloved Wilmette. We can do better!'

' Please keep Wilmette's original character and ban all glass buildings!'

' Enough with all the glass buildings, we can do better.'

' Please preserve Wilmette’s charm and traditions! The new  development should be changed to fit the village’s historic architecture.'

' The overwhelming changes to Green Bay Road, and concern for fellow Wilmette residents that are losing their view and their neighborhoods, have convinced me to sign this. Clarifications of Wilmette Village Board intentions will be appreciated.'

' We must join together, with love and dedication to the current and future iteration of our lovely village - with it’s characteristic warm, welcoming, cohesive visual thumbprint - keeping our heritage. A glass structure (on Green Bay Road!), is anathema to the very fabric of our community!'

'Architectural character in a village matters! I vote to retain charm, individuation, and continuance of our roots as a village. Other Northshore villages have supported retaining their uniqueness by not rushing to make changes because big businesses offer their construction packages to complete a blighted area.'

' Please stop building glass buildings. Please keep the architectural integrity of Wilmette and especially the Imperial Motors building which is a beautiful building and adds so much class and character to Wilmette. Wilmette is such quant beach town, let's keep it that way.'

'I do not believe this design supports the aesthetic ethics of Wilmette.'

'People live in Wilmette because of the small town feel and a sense of community. It is the job of village representatives to act in the interest of its residents. Another glass tower is not the best option for Wilmette.'

'Please keep Wilmette charming. This is why we moved here and not out of state!'

' I grew up in Wilmette. It's the first place I ever remember. I want to keep it the way it is.'

' I appreciate your work. Preserve Wilmette Character. Thank you.'

' It is important to maintain Village character in the proposed development. The building mass, window openings and material selection must be compatible with local surroundings.'

' High density housing is necessary, and this is a good place to put it, but it can also be attractive and more contextual. Optima can do better.'

'Keep Wilmette historical.'

' The glass building not only looks out of place but a glass facade has a negative impacts on the environment. From bird collisions to blinding reflections to energy inefficiencies, another glass building isn’t the right choice for Wilmette.'

'I love Winnetka's choice to build  new buildings in keeping with the historical aesthetic of these Northshore communities.'

'I totally support the preservation of Wilmette architecture. The village has been completely ignoring this in all of the new construction approvals. They neem to rethink the overall plan of development for our village.'

'Don't like the building one bit'

' We should observe our neighboring communities, and note the difference it makes when historic buildings are preserved, and new construction can blend in with the old. We already have many glass buildings. Let’s preserve our past and add more charm to our village'

'Please preserve the character and charm of Wilmette'

'So proud of the people in Wilmette for trying to preserve the unique Village of Wilmette'

'Please keep up the pressure to build something inline with Wilmette's character. Thank you.'

' Please SAVE any Historic Character that

Wilmette has left !!!'

' Support preserving Wilmette’s architectural character.'

'We don't need any more glass and steel type modern buildings! Please have developers redesign so as to incorporate our villages quant character and charm.'

'We live here for the historic charm and simple life. Stop making the villages of the north shore look like office parks.'

'We need to preserve our village environment.'

'I couldn't agree more that we need to stop this kind of development.'

' The charm and character of historic communities should not be taken for granted. Supporting sustainable and thoughtful development which preserves the style and feel of downtown Wilmette not a quick option to fill a short-term budget gap that impacts our community landscape for years to come. '

'I object to another Optima Box. The architecture in Wilmette has always been brick and Tudor-- We already have 2 "boxes" that are eyesores. Enough is enough.'

' Agree that One Winnetka is an example of how to stay true to the character of Wilmette’s existing village landscape.'

'Thank you for fighting to protect Wilmette! This building is a monstrosity - completely out of character with our town. I would not oppose if it was designed with character like One Winnetka!'

'We need to protect the character of Wilmette's town center.'

'Unattractive and out of character with Wilmette village.'

'To the Board: Please do not build this building that looks horrible next to the existing glass building. Aesthetics matter - for those who live in this community and to attract others to live here. It's shocking that you are considering this proposal.'

' I grew up in Wilmette and I feel the Village Board and Plan Commission do not have the character of this village in mind based on the Plan Commission which I was part of the plan of 30 years ago. Wilmette should value the character of the Village when it comes to size and architecture'

'Please listen to the Wilmette Residents on this issue.'

'Do better. No Optima Building.'

'I oppose the new proposed Optima building.'

' I'm an architect that works and lives in Wilmette, and am concerned about keeping the beauty and character of Wilmette alive. As architects, it is our responsibility to ensure respect of cultural impact of design in our community. This means creating designs that respect and celebrate the cultural and aesthetic identity of a place, and they should always prioritize the experience of the people and history of the place. It seems like this is not the case with the current design of the new Optima project, as seen by the previous one they built on Greenbay Rd. The charm and beauty that attracts people to live in Wilmette will be lost if projects like this will continue - we have to preserve Wilmette's character.'

' Lived in Wilmette for Forty years. Wilmette always my favorite township. It preserve old school humanity and intelligent , yet with small community charm. Please do not opt to the build plan on the left side with glass window and monster look. The right side picture of comprehensive plan is much better with quality scene.'

' Please don’t ruin Wilmette with these box like unappealing structures. Wilmette is such a wonderful place to live because of the varied architecture and the hometown feeling. There is already enough of these on Green Bay Rd. We don’t need any more square unattractive buildings. PLEASE don’t let this happen.'

What ther're saying

These letters embody everything about Preserve Wilmette Character

I have lived most of my life in Wilmette and I run a small business in the village. I have lived in several cities and towns throughout the world as well. I have chosen to raise my children and run my business here because it beautifully balances both a cosmopolitan and a small-town feel. My family, our neighbors and I all value the quiet beauty of the lakeshore, walkable lovely tree lined streets, pleasant shops and personal feel to our town center. My clients prefer to come to my location in Wilmette rather than in the city for the same reasons. I don't live in Wilmette because I want it to become an ugly glass-towered city, indistinguishable from other glass-towered cities. Our village center embodies a charming character that you can see in our classic quaint buildings, brick streets, gentle street lighting, and careful stewardship of the community. Development for development's sake, where we only see value in the money we make, is a huge and irrevocable mistake. Village managers must not only look to the next easy dollar but have long-term vision, respect for the integrity of the community and an understanding of what this community brings to its residents and businesses. We can put some effort into creatively an innovatively entering new phases for the village while maintaining the character and spirit at its foundation. Executed properly, this approach will enhance our quality of life, increase long term property values and business interests. If we underestimate the full aesthetic of what we have already built in this lovely community, we will lose it -- to our collective sorrow.

We must join together, with love and dedication to the current and future iteration of our lovely village - with it’s characteristic warm, welcoming, cohesive visual thumbprint - keeping our heritage. A glass structure (on Green Bay Road!), is anathema to the very fabric of our community! It stands out like a sore thumb. There is zero consideration of Or commitment to the inherent charm of Wilmette and the “continuity “ of our village. If this building proceeds, the visual charm of Wilmette will be forever changed - and not for the better. Any decision to support this now will be rued and regretted in future decades to come. Any developers in Wilmette should be charged with building proposals which are in keeping with the overall, characteristics of our village. Winnetka and its board member decision makers get it, as evidenced by One Winnetka. We can do better than a glass monstrosity, Wilmette. We are - all - charged with commitment to protect what makes Wilmette so visually spectacular and cohesive - not cookie cutter, but cohesive, as our village continues to redevelop. Let the wisdom that has and is guiding the redevelopment of downtown Wilmette be the guide and standard for this lot on Green Bay. Thank you.

Architectural character in a village matters! I vote to retain charm, individuation, and continuance of our roots as a village. Other Northshore villages have supported retaining their uniqueness by not rushing to make changes because big businesses offer their construction packages to complete a blighted area. Glencoe negotiated with Walgreens to keep their old charming pharmacy and retain their long-time pharmacist. Winnetka turned down a renowned architect's stunning proposal because it was too big- even though the design continued with the village's Tudor facade. It was not their vision for the future. Conversely, Winnetka's approval of residential beachfront development was not thought out fully. That course of action will affect other lake homes, and harm the entire lakefront. What YOU, the trustees do now decides the character of the village for decades to come. Yes, Green Bay Road needs development in several areas. Yes, Wilmette needs revenue. Yes all of us would like the empty storefronts to be prospering as well as increase housing near commuter areas. Optima Building reminds me of McDonald's recent entry [ try] to our area. Big businesses can offer fast remedies due to their organizational structure with promises to add value to the community. Many of us disagree expedient solutions are not necessarily the wisest choice. This developer takes pride in their buildings all looking alike. Any building Optima designs is recognizable and close to being a rubber stamp of the former endeavors. To the village trustees-BRAVO for the downtown conversion into a mecca of local restaurants. Wilmette does not have national restaurant chains, fast food or drive-throughs in our village center. YOU DID IT RIGHT! Please choose to develop our village to attract new residents for the reasons, we who live here chose Wilmette. 260
